Exploring Vafe’s Hidden Gems: Hiking to the Kryonerida Cave and Beyond

Located in the heart of the Apokoronas region, Vafe village offers an incredible hiking experience for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. One of the most significant hikes in the area leads to the Kryonerida Cave, a site with deep historical roots. Legend tells us that during the Turkish occupation, 130 villagers sought refuge in the cave but tragically perished when smoke was used to suffocate them. This historical site serves as a reminder of Crete’s rich and turbulent past.

Continuing southeast, the hike brings you to a second hidden gem: the Kalamato Cave. Unlike Kryonerida, this cave is known for its stunning natural beauty. The cave features intricate rock formations, small chambers, and deep precipices. Archaeological findings show that it was inhabited as far back as the Neolithic era, making it a must-visit for history buffs and nature lovers alike.

For a different kind of adventure, head to the Vothonas Plateau, located at an altitude of 600 meters. The hike begins in the quiet neighborhood of Areviti and follows a 4.5 km dirt road surrounded by breathtaking views of the White Mountains. Along the way, you’ll be greeted by peaceful hills, covered in cypress trees and other greenery. The area is often used as grazing land for sheep, and you might even encounter local shepherds tending to their flocks.

Whether you’re fascinated by Crete’s history or its natural beauty, hiking in Vafe provides an unforgettable experience.
